Suomen Palomiesliitto SPAL ry (Finnish Association of Fire Fighters), together with its 27 regional member organisations, represents the interests of about 3000 employees working in the Rescue Departments and the Emergency Response Centers. Students at the Emergency Services Colleges can also join the union as student members.

SPAL tries to improve general economic welfare and professional benefits of its members.
The union also affects members’ social status and the development of their rights and enhances cohesion and solidarity among them.

Decision making

SPAL’s Executive Board (Liittohallitus) meets about 10 times a year. The Board consists of president, 2 vice-presidents and 10 members. Each member of the Board represents one of the 12 Rescue service regions and the Emergency Response Center.
SPAL’s Union Conference (Liittokokous) is held once a year and all the major decisions are made there. Every regional organisation has its own authorized person who votes and speaks on behalf of every member in that region. However, all SPAL’s members are welcome to this occasion.
